Friday night update

Well, another Friday night is almost done and the weekend will pass quickly. Time is flying so fast. Seeing as we’ll miss most of the workup to Christmas, I listened to Christmas music on my satellite radio all week. Nobody can resist feeling good when they listen to Christmas music (at least for the first few days)

Jen and I both finished work today. Jen’s department had a Christmas / Farewell party at a local watering hole this afternoon. Because of much different reasons I slipped out the side door without much hoopla.

So, whats left? I need to put the motorcycle away for the winter and bring in some more firewood. Pretty boring stuff for 5 days before leaving for China, eh? A couple of social engagements fill out our weekend. Tomorrow night is J&J’s farewell party for us, then a family brunch on Sunday. Family and friends…. What could be better?

One week from tonight we’ll be arriving in Chongqing and prepping for getting Kate on Saturday. I wonder. Over 100 weeks of waiting and just 1 week to go.

Congratulations to Mel and Pete (the blogless Freddy Beachers) who should be getting their referral this month. No official cutoff date from the CCAA yet, but it looks like they are in if you pay attention to the Rumor Queen. Dianne and Joe, January is your month.

And Chris, our flight may leave @ 5:55 AM, but that’s 5:55 PM Beijing time. Coffee, no. Wobbly pop, yep! OK, maybe a bit too early for a wobbly pop. We’ll wait and celebrate as we cross the international dateline somewhere around 180 degrees over the Pacific Ocean.

Well, that’s it from here… not much terribly exciting to really report right now, but this time next week will be a different story.

The moral of this week’s story. Things are good. REAL good. There’s a skip in my step.

Jens baby shower

A few weeks ago, Jen's friends at work had a shower for her. Look at all the stuff that Kate got. They were sneaky and took Jens todo list from her desk so alot iof the items are actual items we needed.

6 days to go, 9 day until Kate, 2 years since our log in

6 days until we leave, 9 days until we get Kate. The 2 big dates are now under 10 days now. Wow! this is becoming very surreal.

Today is 2 years since our paperwork was logged in China. It's been such a long time since we received the news of our login and such a rollercoaster since then. What started out as (what we thought would be) an 8 month wait until baby has stretched to 24 months.

7 Days to go

7 days to go. There Penny! Is this better than another picture of me???

I setup Mom and Dad on Skype (and MSN Messenger as plan B) tonight so we can talk and video back and forth while we're away. Does anyone have experience using Skype or MSN Messenger while in Beijing or Chongqing?

pictures from Scott / Kates baby shower

My department had a little party for me and Kate and they gave Kate some beautiful gifts. Thanks everyone for your kindness and generosity.

I "love" having my picture taken.
Someone uses way too much tape when they wrap! See the look of determination on my face.
Being a guy, I just stuffed the clothes into the gift bag and moved on to the next gift, but they made me go back and fold the clothes properly as thats what I'll need to do at home.

8 days until we leave

8 Days to go. We're ready! On Friday, we received our final package from Children's Bridge which had our Chinese Visa's and Air Canada tickets in it. Quite weird to see a ticket printed for He Fu Qing. For anyone who's been-there-done-that with Children's Bridge, our Beijing guide is Ma-Ri.

We've updated our wills, the banking is all done, the Christmas lights are up, and the yard is "winterized". Jennifer did the grocery shopping on the weekend for all of the non-perishables we'll need when we get back and her mother is going to pick us up all the perishables we need just before we get back.

The car is booked into the garage for a check-over and the car seat is installed in the car. After fighting with the straps for close to an hour, I finally have it snug enough so that it won't move around. The secret... lie across the car seat putting all my weight on it then strain like crazy to get the seatbelt fastened. Yes, I could have asked my neighbor with the 2 car seats in their car for help, but whats the fun in that???

The luggage is all under control. Each suitcase weighs 11 lbs which leaves us with 39 lbs each for everything we need. After doing a quick trial run the other day, it should not be a problem. We just need to gather the final clothes we'll be taking, throw it all in and that's done. The in-flight entertainment is under control - crossword puzzles, a deck of cards, the computer, a couple books, baseball gloves and ball (seeing if you're paying attention). We've made arrangements to have someone pick up the car from the airport on the day we leave.

It looks like Chris and Tracy from Moncton are going to get Madison at the same time as us. Wow! Their agency worked quick! They received their referral a month after us. They are flying out on the same flights as us then we're also travelling back to Toronto on the same flight. As their flights were only booked last week, they have to get home via Ottawa first, so they don't get in until later Thursday night. I believe there is 6 families in their group... that means somewhere around 14 adoptive babies on the flight back from Beijing to Toronto. Plus whoever else is on their with their kids.

Thats it from here...

A game to play in China's traffic jams

At this time in 2 weeks, we’ll be on that big 777 and somewhere over Western Canada on our way to Beijing. Wow! Only 2 weeks to go.

I’m an information junkie so I enjoy things like you’ll read below. I’ll be looking while we’re being shuttled all over the country.

(from the Economist, 10 Nov 07) For decades cars owned by foreign companies or individuals have had to use black licence-plates. These stand out from the blue plates now used by most civilian vehicles (there are other colours, too: eg, white for the police and army, and yellow for bigger vehicles).

The black plates were originally intended to make it easier for the police to identify foreign-owned vehicles and stop them from entering restricted areas. In the 1980s large swathes of China were off-limits to foreigners. These were often areas used by the army or considered too embarrassingly backward for foreigners to see. Roads in the countryside around Beijing were dotted with signs telling foreigners to proceed no further. By 2005, however, official press reports said only 8% of the country was still off-limits to foreigners.

The status of the black licence-plates has changed too. When they were introduced almost all other passenger cars were for official use. But in the past few years private-car ownership has grown rapidly. Members of China's burgeoning middle-class have come to covet black plates. They suggest status and overseas connections. Traffic police sometimes turn a blind eye to transgressions by black-plated cars (perhaps to avoid the embarrassment of conversing in a foreign tongue).

This fuelled a black-plate black market. Many try to register their vehicles as foreign-owned, and many black-plated cars now have at best tenuous foreign connections. From this month, however, foreigners all get blue plates too. Only diplomats still get special ones, marked by a character meaning "envoy".

But vehicular discrimination survives. Cars with black plates can keep them. And the discerning motorist (and policeman) will still spot a foreigner's blue plate. In Beijing they all bear the letters LB. The police say that this will make foreigners' cars easier to manage.

Happy Birthday Kate

Dear Kate,

We cant be with you today in person but we are with you in our hearts. Today is your first birthday and we are here at home, as far away from you as possible.

Just to let you know, you received a bunch of cards, a bunch of gifts and a bunch of phone calls today. You;re not even here yet and you've already made a great impact on a lot of people's lives.

We don't want you to miss a celebration so we've decided that we'll have your birthday party on January 20th. That's the 1st month anniversary of you being home. What a great time to celebrate your birthday as well. All your friends and family can come watch you play in your cake.

Please stay safe and healthy and we'll be there soon to be a family.

Love you...
Mom & Dad.

Kate's playroom

Hi everyone... the last big project is now done. (well, almost).

Here is a pic of Kate's playroom. We have no carpet in the house so we decided to put down the foam floor for her to tumble on. The black square is a chalkboard wall for her to become the next Picasso painter or Einstein mathematician. The star in the window is from our friends J&J who recently went to Sweden and picked it up for us @ Ikea. We need to finish putting it together and put the light in it to have it light up thru all it's holes. The shelves still have some Scott stuff on them which needs to go but that's another day. We figured the big plastic bins would work well for throwing her toys into. There's more in the corners you cant see. The mirror, at Kate's level, was a wedding gift that was upstairs. I painted it with the paint from Kate's room and mounted it at a level for Kate to see herself in. Jen hung a princess costume and fairy costume on it for her to use for dress-up. The walls are "pale daffodil" but it looks quite washed out in the pic. Alot of the toys you see are yardsale goodies or from you guys. We have been very fortunate to have such good friends. Thanks everyone.

Here it is...

In my hand is the Letter of Coming

Yesterday, I needed to go home for lunch as Abby the dog was not feeling well and I wanted to make sure she was OK. She was. Well, just as I pulled in the driveway, the Canada Post truck pulled up and had me sign for a package form the NB Government. It was a congratulatory letter from the gov’t and 2 originals of the “Notice of Travelling to China for Adoption” (same paperwork, new name)

We’re just waiting for our passports and airline tickets to be sent to us and then we have everything.

Next… begin packing! I’m a chronic over packer… I pack too much when I travel for work, I pack too much when we go camping, I pack too much when we go hiking for the day. I like to be prepared for any situation so I over pack. Packing only necessities will be a real challenge. Jennifer will probably do most of the packing.

In case you want to follow their blog, it’s located HERE.

And Chris and Tracy… from what I hear, you still don’t have a kid’s room done yet. Time to get it done!

Our Letter of Coming is here

Jen received a call this morning that China has sent our "Letter of Coming" (now called the Notice of Travelling to China for Adoption). This letter basically gives us the permission we need to complete the adoption and to travel within CHina. This was the last hurdle that we were waiting for before we could officially say that we were approved.

Smooth sailing now... Just 33 more days to go until we leave.

Why we need a kid

Here's Abby on Halloween. Do you think we need a kid?!?!?!
